LASER KIDNEY STONE REMOVAL (RIRS)

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery is a procedure for doing surgery within the kidney using a viewing tube called a fiberoptic endoscope.

RIRS may be done to remove a stone. The stone is seen through the scope and can then be manipulated or crushed by an ultrasound probe, evaporated by a laser probe, or grabbed by small forceps.

The procedure is usually done under general or spinal anaesthesia.

Advantages of RIRS (over open surgery)
  • Quicker solution of the problem
  • Elimination of prolonged pain after surgery
  • Much faster recovery

FLEXIBLE URETEROSCOPY

Minimally Invasive

Flexible Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to reach any part of the kidney (Pelvicalyceal system) through the urinary passage and to diagnose and treat small kidney tumours or stones. This procedure is partly similar to Laser treatment, but the difference is instead of using Laser to remove the stones, a traditional device is used to break the stones into pieces.

This procedure is also done under spinal or general anaesthesia and needs only one day of hospital stay and patients can resume work within 3 days.

Treatment Highlights
  • 1 day hospitalisation
  • No Open Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive procedure
  • Preferred for all age groups
  • Removes stones up to 3cms
  • Cost-effective

SHOCK WAVE LITHOTRIPSY (ESWL)

Non-Surgical Lithotripsy

Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) is a nonsurgical technique for treating stones in the kidney or ureter (the tube going from the kidney to the bladder) using high-energy shock waves. Stones are broken into "stone dust" or fragments that are small enough to pass in urine. If large pieces remain, another treatment can be performed.

Shock waves from outside the body are targeted at a kidney stone causing the stone to fragment. The stones are broken into tiny pieces. It is sometimes called ESWL: Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy.

Treatment Highlights
  • Suitable for tiny stones
  • Applicable in early stages
  • Day Care procedure (40-45 mins / session)
  • No Hospitalisation
  • May involve multiple sessions
